Bringing Kyoto’s Reclaimed Wood to Luxury Spaces Around the World

Kyoto is home to a culture that has been nurtured for more than a thousand years as the ancient capital of Japan.

In spring, people admire the cherry blossoms. In summer, they seek the coolness of the season. In autumn, they appreciate the changing colors of the leaves. In winter, they cherish the tranquility.
Kyoto is a city where people have lived in harmony with nature, bringing the beauty of the four seasons into their homes and passing that beauty down through generations.

Within this way of life, wood was never treated simply as a building material.

A single beam carries the history of a family. A single floorboard holds memories of children growing up. A single traditional door reflects the lives of generations of people who passed through it.

Kyoto’s reclaimed wood is not simply “old wood.”

It is “time itself”—wood that has endured for one or two hundred years and quietly witnessed the lives of the people who lived alongside it.

There are countless luxury materials found throughout the world.

Rare natural stones, beautiful marble, the finest leather, and exquisite metals. Yet there is a value that even these materials cannot create.

That value is “time.”

Time is something that can never be created by human hands.

Kyoto’s reclaimed wood embodies a hundred years of time, two hundred years of history, and the spiritual culture cultivated by a city with more than a thousand years of history.

Beams darkened and polished naturally over time.

Columns shaped and finished by the hands of craftsmen.

Traditional doors and architectural elements touched by countless hands over generations.

The grain created by nature and the years of human life that unfolded around each piece overlap to create a beauty that exists nowhere else in the world.

Modern luxury is not simply about things that are expensive.

It is about being “authentic.”

Being “one of a kind.”

And having “a story.”

These qualities have become the new definition of value.

That is why an increasing number of luxury hotels, brand boutiques, restaurants, resort villas, and private residences around the world are incorporating reclaimed wood as a central element of their spatial design.

Kyoto’s reclaimed wood speaks to all five senses.

The warmth felt the moment it is touched.

The gentle fragrance of wood.

The deep tones that only long years can create.

The natural surface that softly catches the light.

And the quiet passage of time that flows through the space.

Whether in a luxury hotel lobby, restaurant, or brand boutique, reclaimed wood creates an atmosphere in which people can experience “authentic Japan” through the space itself.

We, Maruka Co., Ltd., the company behind Kyoto Kozai Ichiba, are a timber merchant that has worked with wood in Kyoto for more than 160 years, since our founding in 1859 (Ansei 6).
We have continued to preserve reclaimed wood and traditional architectural elements passed down from Kyoto’s machiya townhouses and traditional homes, connecting them with new spaces and new generations.

Today, we maintain one of the largest inventories of reclaimed wood in Japan and propose materials for a wide range of projects, including hotels, commercial facilities, restaurants, and private residences.

What we want to deliver is not simply old timber.

We want to share the culture of Kyoto with the world.

The Japanese spirit of mottainai—the belief that nothing of value should be wasted.

The wisdom of giving old things new life rather than simply discarding them.

And the belief in preserving, nurturing, and passing value on to future generations.

All of these values live within each piece of reclaimed wood.

Long before the words “SDGs” and “sustainability” became widely used around the world, Japan already had a culture built around the circulation and continued use of resources.

Using reclaimed wood is not only an act of environmental responsibility. It is also a way of carrying Japan’s spiritual and cultural heritage into the future.

What affluent people around the world truly seek is not luxury that anyone can acquire.

It is history that exists nowhere else.

Culture that could only have been cultivated in that particular place.

And authentic stories passed down through generations.

Kyoto’s reclaimed wood embodies all of these qualities.

A single beam can tell the story of a city with more than a thousand years of history.

A single traditional door can convey the aesthetic sensibilities that Japanese people have cherished for generations.

A single space can leave a profound and lasting impression on those who experience it.

We, Kyoto Kozai Ichiba / Maruka Co., Ltd., continue to bring reclaimed wood and traditional architectural elements—cultural heritage in their own right—from Kyoto to the world.

This is not simply about exporting building materials.

It is a challenge to carry Kyoto’s history, its way of life, its aesthetic sensibilities, and the Japanese culture of cherishing the passage of time into the future and out into the world.

What we want to bring to luxury spaces around the world is the authentic Kyoto.

We believe that wood carrying more than a thousand years of history will begin weaving new stories around the world.
